Bullet Electra Range
|
| After 55 years the Royal Enfield Bullet has a new engine, designed and
developed in conjunction with the internationally respected Austrian power-train
systems company, AVL. It had to retain the traditional appearance, simplicity,
and sound of the British ‘single’ but with greater inherent reliability
and performance coupled with better fuel consumption and the ability meet
anticipated emissions legislation around the Globe.
There are several UK-designed variants in the Electra range; the standard model, which appears
on this page. Click on the following links or images below for details of the trials-inspired
500-T, Fifties look

Enfield Motors are based in Chennai [Madras] in India, where production
continued uninterrupted following the final demise of UK manufacturing in 1970.
The brand new 500cc lean-burn engine was developed in Austria, while Dr. Stuart
McGuigan of Cranfield University, in the UK, designed the 5-speed gearbox and
the tyres are British-made by Avon.
In 350cc form this engine has been in production in India since 1999; the 500cc
version has been developed during this time and has been successfully tested in
the UK over the past two years. During extensive testing (which included giving
pillion rides to an MP) UK distributors Watsonian-Squire developed a
performance
upgrade kit.

This has been developed over the past year as an integrated package to
provide a modest improvement in both torque and horsepower . It incorporates a
32mm Dellorto carburetor , modified inlet air filtration system, and a road
legal free flow silencer which produces a deeper exhaust note. As an approved
kit, its fitting will not affect the machine warranty.
Effective, affordable and legal, with full fitting instructions, the cost to the
customer is £299. It is the first of a series of accessories and
modifications planned for this new Royal Enfield model.

Warning
Although the 500cc Bullet
Electra-X, which has been widely reviewed in MCN, Classic Bike, Old Bike Mart &
Motorcycle Sport & Leisure, is a UK model, the 350cc version is not. If you are
offered a 350cc Bullet Electra, you will find it differs significantly in
performance & specification from the UK model. It does NOT have the
lean burn engine.
