Bullet girls still fired up after 2,780 miles

Rowena Hoseason and Emm Walters rode into the car park of Royal Enfield Motorcycle’s UK HQ to rapturous applause from staff & well-wishers at 1.00 PM on Saturday 21st May, having traveled 2,780 miles around England, Scotland and Wales in just 12 days.  Their epic journey, which they both made on new Royal Enfield Bullet Electra-X bikes, was intended to be “… about two girls, packing panniers and heading off Round Britain on a couple of classics.”

Their trip started and finished in Blockley, near the Cotswold market town of Moreton-in-Marsh, where Royal Enfield’s UK head office is located, as the Company lent them the 500cc Electra-X bikes.  The girls, who both write for RealClassic magazine, visited every official Enfield dealer on the UK mainland, in the region of 50 different bike shops in locations as diverse as Torquay, Morecambe, Wensleydale and Fife!

“We received an unbelievable welcome everywhere we went,” enthused Rowena.  “We were officially greeted by three mayors (two of whom were ladies) and a High Sheriff.  One of the other highlights was a freshly baked Cornish pasty breakfast at 5.30 AM in Bodmin.  ”

The 500cc single cylinder motorcycles are the latest incarnation of the Royal Enfield Bullet, which has been in production since 1955 and performed well throughout the trip, including a grueling 380-mile ride from Kent to Cornwall, in one day.

“The bikes were fantastic every day, all day long,” beamed Emm.

Their only major set-back proved to be the distance covered – nearly 2,800 miles, some 25% further than their initial estimate of 2,222 miles and an average of over 230 miles per day.

There are 750,000 female motorcycle licence holders in the UK and women account for 18% of successful test candidates.  Rowena & Emm hope that their adventure will encourage more female riders to get out their and enjoy the freedom of two wheels.

Would they do it again?  “Yes, like a shot.”
